What is Relationship and Sex Education?
Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) is learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health. Some aspects are taught in Biology at both Key Stage 3 and 4, and others are taught as part of the Personal Development (PD) Curriculum and form part of our Personal Development Days which are held five times during the academic year.
A comprehensive programme of RSE provides accurate information about the body, reproduction, sex, and sexual health. It also gives children and young people essential skills for building positive, enjoyable, respectful and non-exploitative relationships and staying safe both on and offline.
All students within the school have equal access to RSE. Topics are revisited to allow provision for previous absence and different levels of understanding and maturity. The programme allows teachers to adapt materials and approaches to suit students of different learning abilities.
Why is it important?

From September 2020, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), along with Health Education, will be statutory and form part of the National Curriculum.
We have reviewed our RSE curriculum and policy so we can be sure our RSE provision is appropriate for our students based on their:
- Age
- Physical and emotional maturity
- Religious and cultural backgrounds
- Special educational needs and disabilities
As part of this process, the school consulted with parents, staff and governors which helped to inform our school’s decisions on when and how certain content is covered. This consultation enabled us to reach a general consensus and we made adjustments to our policy and curriculum based on this feedback. Parents do not have the right to withdraw their child from Relationships & Sex Education, however parents do have the right to request withdrawal. At Park High School we are more than happy to discuss any concerns or worries which parents may have.
